Parents Lead by Modeling the Way with Shannon Petralito

July 27, 2014

This week's show is all about how parents can lead by setting the example and modeling the way.

Fitness expert and professional figure competitor Shannon Petralito, joined us to explore how leading by example and modeling the way for our children can help us instill upon them the values of accountability and self-respect.

Shannon’s inspirational story is a perfect example of how we can show our children that they can be passionate in life, have a vision and go for their dreams!

This week I focused The Fitness Minute on the 5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership. Developed by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, the 5 practices are a scientifically proven model of how to lead positive change with superior results.

As I thought about Shannon's story of dedication and leading by example, I could not think of a better leadership model to highlight than the 5 Practices.  She exemplifies the 5 Practices each and every day.

During our interview, Shannon and I explored the challenges of modeling the way for our children with nutritional choices.  This means sacrifice, education and NOT following the crowd to a McDonalds. Instead we have to find healthier alternatives or prepare our own food.

This is NOT easy, but leadership never is...

We also discussed how we can show our children that parents can accomplish amazing things when we have a vision and are passionate about accomplishing our goals. When we are inspired to follow our own goals we are teaching our children that we they can also be passionate about live and follow their own dreams.

As Shannon expertly explains, it is never too late!

Until next time, I leave you with two questions to ponder:

Are you a good leader?  And how do you know?

Self-reflection can be painful but as they say, no pain no gain.

Thanks for sharing everyone!
